Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to commonly asked questions about my services.
What is a naturopathic doctor, and how is naturopathic medicine different from conventional medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary care that blends modern science with traditional, natural therapies. It focuses on prevention, finding the root cause of a health issue, and treating you as a whole person — rather than just managing symptoms with pharmaceuticals or surgery, as conventional medicine typically does. You can learn more about my approach on the Services page.
What education and training do naturopaths in Australia receive?
Licensed naturopaths complete an accredited four-year naturopathic medicine degree covering biomedical sciences, clinical training and natural therapeutics. That said, training varies a lot between practitioners in Australia — some qualified under older “grandfathered” standards before the accreditation changes — so it’s always worth asking your practitioner about their specific qualifications.
Are naturopaths the same as homeopaths?
No. Homeopathy is just one tool within naturopathic medicine. A homeopath typically works with homeopathic remedies alone, while a naturopath draws on multiple modalities — nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, lifestyle and mind-body approaches. I use all of these where appropriate, to build the most complete treatment plan for each patient.
Is naturopathic medicine scientific and evidence-based?
Yes. My approach integrates current scientific research with traditional naturopathic practices. Many therapies — clinical nutrition and herbal medicine in particular — have solid supportive evidence behind them, and naturopaths are trained to critically appraise research and apply it safely. I base every treatment plan on the most current evidence available, built on a foundation of traditional naturopathic principles.
Is naturopathic care safe?
When you’re working with a registered, professionally trained naturopath, the safety record is strong. Treatment plans are tailored to your life stage — including pregnancy, children and older adults — with careful attention to interactions and contraindications. Always check that your practitioner is registered, experienced and appropriately qualified.
Is it safe to see you while taking pharmaceuticals or seeing my regular doctor?
Yes, completely. As a functional medicine practitioner and naturopath, I’ve trained extensively in how nutrition and herbal medicine interact with pharmaceutical medications. I’m equipped to assess potential safety issues and make sure your treatment plan is the safest option for your situation.
Do you work alongside my GP or specialists?
Yes. I work within an integrated care model, coordinating safely alongside your existing medical team wherever they’re open to that dialogue. In practice, this usually means exchanging results or updates by email, facilitated by you as the patient.
What conditions do you help with?
With years of clinical experience, I support both acute and chronic concerns across all ages — including digestive, hormonal, metabolic, mental health, immune and musculoskeletal issues. I often see complex or long-standing cases where other treatment approaches haven’t fully resolved things, and take a whole-person approach to finding what’s actually going on.
What can I expect at my first visit?
Your first consultation runs for 60 minutes or longer. That extra time lets us properly cover your health history, lifestyle, nutrition, environment and goals, and start mapping out any testing or an individualised treatment plan. It gives us a solid foundation to work from. Follow-up appointments are shorter — usually around 30 minutes — and focus on adjusting your plan as you progress.
Do you offer lab testing and functional assessments?
Yes. I use a combination of conventional pathology and targeted functional testing to explore the root causes behind your symptoms — including nutrient status, inflammation and microbiome health — guided by clinical judgement and your individual goals.
